Long
Distance Relationships

You can call me the queen of racking up sky miles. Although I have never been inducted into the infamous Mile High Club, I have traveled back and forth, through and around multiple destinations in order to see the love of my life…at the time. Over a thousand miles away in Colorado, my relationship was incredibly special and triumphed through the difficulties of the dreaded distance! But how did I make it work for a year and a half?
I was fortunate enough to have travel benefits from my mother working for the glorious United Airlines for 32 years. Nice bonus! But I think it is important for two people to be independent and start their own lives before uniting together. It worked well. I was young enough to want my independence and freedom, but also wanting a committed relationship of which I found. The waiting in lines and dealing with airports, crowds, layovers, plane changes, delays, and cancellations was a pain in the ass! I won't lie. And after September 11th, of which I had just arrived home that morning around 12:30am on the last flight out of Denver and thank goodness was delayed because I had the departure time wrong, I was scared to fly like most Americans. The events definitely opened up seats in first class, which commenced the flow of free drinks. "Another Bloody Mary, please!" The drinking was strictly for purposes of calming my nerves and nothing else! Hehem.
So in order to make long distance relationships a little easier on our readers I have created a list of necessities that prove to be saviors in these circumstances. Remember, true love can endure anything. Nobody said it would be easy!
-
Calling Cards or a bundle of free night, weekend or anytime minutes.
-
Good friends to hangout with so the lonely nights don't seem so lonely.
-
Extra savings for road trips, airfares, and if you are very lucky…buddy pass fares from friends that work in the airline industry.
-
Cards to send him/her to keep the sparks alive. Sending written love letters are great old-fashioned romantic gestures.
-
Journals. Write down thought and feelings so you record the emotions you go through and share with him/her one day. Journals can be therapeutic and in the end you have a lasting tribute to your life. Ok, maybe one with a lock!
-
Internet capabilities for quick notes or long letters! And access to Instant Messaging is a bonus.
-
Digital camera to send pictures and keep the interest "peaking"!
-
Both parties could invest in computer video cameras to talk online and see each other during the conversation.
-
And anything else that may come in
handy!
